Three Little Words

You can describe the state of my apartment at the moment in just three words. Sarah did so just this evening. She walked in the door, wrinkled her nose, and said, "What's that smell?" Yep, it's time to clean. For once, the rankness of the air was not caused by Buddy's intestinal problems. It's just the stale smell of girl and not-too-clean dog living together in squalor.

I'm counting the minutes until break, and then I'm cleaning it from top to bottom. It's going to be squeak by Sunday. The smell of this place by Sunday will be the smell of clean.

Ugh, I need to clean this weekend too. I love that warm fuzzy feeling of smug satisfaction & accomplishment once it's all finally done, but that alone never seems to provide enough motivation to start. More typically, it's the threat of having guests that finally lights a fire under me. Enjoy your time off and clean place!

You're right, Chris. I should totally have a dinner party. That's the only time I actually do clean, rather than just talk about it.

But now I'm wondering...do all of the houses of all of my friends really get as terribly dirty as mine does, and they just clean them before I arrive? It seems unlikely. I know my brother's doesn't.

It's not just your house that's filthy, Alex. Our kitchen floor is developing a thick coating of organic material- baby vomit mixed with bits of half-chewed pasta, Cheerios and vegetables that failed the taste test.

Rather than clean it up, I've decided to let it lie there. I figure that over the next few months, it should compost into a rich, loamy soil. Then I'll be all ready for spring planting!

Good plan, but then you have to till and water. I can't even keep 3 little houseplants happy. What would I do with a crop rotation?

As with everyone else, I have to say that you are not alone... though in my case it is twin daughters that are helping (or not helping as the case may be) make the mess.

BTW... not sure whether "what's that smell" is three or four words... three and a half?

Yeah, but kid mess is somehow more excusable than I-just-got-home-and-dumped-my-crap-on-the-floor-because-I'm-too-lazy-to-put-it-where-it-goes. One word, by the way. Hyphenated.
